Changes Made to First Aid Courses
Are you aware of the changes made to first aid courses or qualifications in first aid that affect you and your company?
From 1st October 2009, the Appointed Person award is no longer be recognised as a practical first aid qualification. This may affect your insurance or employment status.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has made two changes:
- Reduced the number of days for the FAW (First Aid at Work) course from 4 to 3
- Changed the 1 day course currently known as Appointed Person to EFAW (Emergency First Aid at Work)
These changes came into effect on 1st Oct 2009.
Emergency First Aid at Work
The Emergency First Aid at Work course is designed to train individuals and employees who require the EFAW qualification. This course will provide the candidate with the skills to understand the role of the first aider and how to assess the situation presented. It will provide the candidate with the first aid skills to respond to a patient who is unconscious, including seizures, how to deliver cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, how to manage a patient who is choking and how to manage a patient who is bleeding. The course will also show how to manage minor injuries.
The Emergency First Aid at Work course is designed to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety Executive Health and Safety at Work (1981) Regulations for First Aid in the Workplace as per the amendments effective from 1st October 2009
First Aid at Work
The First Aid at Work course is designed to train individuals and company staff who require HSE approved first aid at work training to meet the requirements of the First Aid at Work (1981) Regulations. This course will provide all the required first aid skills necessary to manage a patient who is not breathing normally, is unconscious, bleeding or is ill or injured prior to the arrival of the emergency services. It also covers other topics such as COSHH, RIDDOR and other first aid health and safety at work information.
The First Aid at Work course is designed to meet the requirements of the HSE Health and Safety at Work (1981) Regulations for First Aid in the Workplace On successful completion of the course and final assessment participants will be awarded a First Aid At Work certificate approved for the purpose of the Health and Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981, which is valid for three years.
Certification
On successful completion of the course participants will be awarded an Emergency FAW certificate, valid for 3 years

Our training venue is based at Canterbury or if you prefer we can train at your venue which will incur an additional cost.
